Riding the Aufderheide on Friday

A group of nine riders, all long past retirement age, get together on Friday's to ride.  The rides are organized by Pat.
On this (Friday) occasion we rode up the Aufderheide Hwy (Hwy 19) from Westfir.  It was a pleasant 25 mile ride in great weather.

We spent three days and two nights on the Rogue River in Oregon.  Paradise Lodge can only be reached on foot or by boat.  There is no cell phone service or internet access.  Just great food and plenty of it and hikes with views of the river and wild life.

I found myself in an old building.
The building was cold and damp

on a dreary, overcast morning I was focused on my computer
the next thing I knew I was sucked into the display

so I escaped out the back door into the alley

Unfortunately, when I entered my computer, it took all my clothes
I asked an old hag, who looked more as a witch, than a person, "where am I, old woman". 

this angered her and she turned me into a frog.
where to this day I hop around and eat flies

View from the summit:

Most people prefer to hike to the summit of Mt Pisgah.  I prefer to do the secondary trails.

Why?

• I am lazy
• the summit climb takes lots of energy
• it is a road and not a trail
• it is the most crowded and most popular trail

I prefer to walk from the main entrance to the north entrance using the Theodore Trail, #17, and then taking the #3 trail back to the main trail.  The distance is about the same as going to the summit and is about 3/4 of the accumulated ascent.  The advantage (for me) is it is on dirt paths and much of it is in the shade.  It is also less traveled.

A Strava Map representation of my walk.  It includes the elevation profile and the path.  The hike was a bit over 3 miles which is about the same as going to the summit and returning.  (It is good to always return from a hike.)

introducing me for the ds106 class

 My name is Dale Schaper.  I am a retired Electronics Instructor from Lane Community College.  Previous to that I was a design engineer for Hewlett Packard in San Diego, Ca.

As you can observe from the picture above, I enjoy bicycle riding.

For passive activities:  I enjoy using GPS and GIS technology to create maps of my hikes and bike rides.  Thanks to Lynn Songer and her GIS curriculum, I was able to map hiking trails for the US Forest Service as a cooperative education project. (I do not believe they ever used the maps.)

I also enjoy making videos using Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements.    My goal is to have the videos be less than three minutes in length (that is my attention span!)  Here are three of them:
